Flow happens when running and juggling feel effortless yet challenging.

Story

I’m a Budapest based runner and 3-ball juggler (futó zsonglőr 🇭🇺), blending distance running with juggling in street runs, races, and events across Hungary.

Long story short, when COVID hit I spent a lot of time juggling balls and kept the habit even after the pandemic. Eventually, the idea came to combine juggling with running. It wasn’t a new idea, as the sport already exists under the name joggling, from jogging and juggling.

I started practicing in the early mornings in a nearby park (to avoid being watched 😉), and it worked well with my existing juggling skills. My first 5k while juggling was around Margaret Island (Margitsziget 🇭🇺) in Budapest in early 2024. Since then, I’ve been running regularly, never without my balls.

Lately, I’ve been practicing at the Athletics Centre (Atlétikai Központ 🇭🇺), near Infopark/BME, and along the Danube, crossing bridges like Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd 🇭🇺) and Chain Bridge (Széchenyi lánchíd 🇭🇺).

It’s weird, tricky, and surprisingly fun to watch, even for dogs. Part sport, part art, part mindfulness, and fully a crowd pleaser.

FAQ

Here are some of the questions I get most often.

Why do you do this?

I guess it started naturally and I keep doing it because I simply love doing it.

It gives me excitement and keeps me fully engaged, I’m fully absorbed. When I’m on the road or on the track, I’m aware of what’s going on around me. I notice the heat, the wind, the rain, running through a dark tunnel, or facing the sun. I notice people cheering during a race, I notice people smiling when running towards me, I love interacting with people during the run. And yes, I still focus on the balls too. I’m in the present and there are just so many things happening.

And there are times when my breathing, stride and throws align perfectly and I can feel light and steady. I feel calm, like everything is a bit slower around me, and that feels amazing.

It’s like being in a different world.

Is this your profession?

No. I work in IT. Once, in a meeting, it came up that I run and juggle, and everyone laughed, saying that was exactly what we were doing at the time.

Do you ever drop the balls?

Sure, it happens sometimes, but I can usually run up to 15 km without a single drop.

If I feel I’m losing control, like in windy conditions or on a sudden turn, I just pause and start again.

Most drops happen when the balls collide, and even then I can sometimes still catch them.
